On 30th March, 1917, the 6th Royal West Surrey (Queens) battalion of 37 Brigade, 12th Division moved into the front line at Arras where they remained until 3rd April. The battalion diary entry for 1st April, the day on which Charles Smart was killed, recorded that the day was quiet but that the enemy’s artillery was more active during the night. |
